Re: Red's house

Yeh the books are long @rav3n the first book in the series is over 21 hrs long. And there are 6 books of about similar length in the original chronicals.

Then his son also wrote a bunch in the dune universe and a few prequels.

I just finished the 3rd book today.

I grew up on the 1984 movie version of the book. I loved it, but it never really made sense until I read the books.

Re: Red's house

I forgot to state that the version im listening to are a production, where the different characters are different voice actors etc, theres some sound effects etc. It won audio book of the year in 2008.

Re: Red's house

@The-red-centaur woah 21hr+ !! i think listening to long audiobooks are quite nice, especially if it's the version with a proper voice cast and background music, etc. i'm listening to a trashy fantasy audiobook at the moment, but i can't complain, the production makes it pretty entertaining.

sounds like you've been a fan of dune for a while! i didn't know the son also wrote some books too, what a cool (and talented) duo! glad you're getting the chance to experience the story in a new way!! let me know your thoughts once you've finished the series 😊

Re: Red's house

@rav3n i am up to book 4, so i still have a lot to get through lol.

and trashy fantasy can be a good place to get absorbed in, no judgement from here.

Re: Red's house

are the last few books longer? @The-red-centaur hope you savour the story!

agreed, it really is a good way to get hooked back in. the plot of the story is great so far, just the choice of words/dialogue that makes it cringey at times 😆

what's next on your list after you finish dune?

Re: Red's house

Im not sure. I love classic sci-fi @rav3n or maybe an epic by Tolkien or something similar. Depends on what I find available.

After I finish the main dune titles I will see if I kind find the others in the dune universe written by Frank's son. So i could be busy a while, as I dont listen every day and often its just a few chapters at a time.

Re: Red's house

omg a Tolkien epic would be amazing. i've only read 'the hobbit', and the audiobook was so fun - loved their singing/folk songs. @The-red-centaur

sounds like Dune's got you covered for a good while, especially with those anniversary editions, etc. i love when there's a big book universe and collection!! do you know if Dune books are still be written? or has the collection ended?

Re: Red's house

@rav3n i just did a quick google, Brian Herbert has still been releasing titles as recent as 2023. Most of the books he released expanded his father's dune universe. As of date there are 23 books so far. The first dune novel came out in 1965. It has aged very well and is considered one of the best sci-fi novels. There is lots of speculation the first gorge lucas star wars was a dune rip off.

Re: Red's house

oh wow 23 books is plenty! will be interesting to see if all the books maintain the same quality of writing/story. those are some impressive authors though, maintaining a sci-fi world like that would not be easy @The-red-centaur omg that speculation around star wars potentially being a dune rip off is so interesting... it's so wild how star wars film franchise blew up while dune's didn't get the same attention 🙃 have you read the star wars series before?

Re: Red's house

As a teen I read a starwars book or two. @rav3n I think star wars took off because of the movies and the games. It was a cultural phenomenon that made sci fi a more normalised genre, in the 60s sci fi was just emerging and the dune books were instantly a success, films weren't a big thing and it didn't become a social phenomenon. Also dune is a very dense, often political series, where as star wars is more fun and doesn't take itself seriously.

Anyways thats my take on it.
