Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

@Mustang67

I'm going to have to print that post out and start checking my coins!

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

@MJG017 there are heaps of different things to look for in coins. And the lower the mintage of a coin, the more money you can get for it. Especially if it is good condition.

I would love to find these error coins.

1966 20c Wavy Baseline

.

The 1966 “wavy baseline” 20 cent coin, for example, has been known to fetch up between $3,000 and $5,000 when in perfect condition.

The "5 cent flamingo error" is an Australian 5 cent coin from the year 2001 (and to a lesser extent, 2002, 2003, and 2005) that features an extra piece of metal on the number 5 on the reverse side. This additional metal, caused by a die crack, resembles a flamingo's beak when the coin is turned upside down, hence the name "flamingo error". This die variety can be worth a significant amount above its face value, with recent sales ranging from approximately $37.80 to $70.

The Australian 2016 "Alien" 5 cent coin, caused by a die clash, is a rare error coin valued in the hundreds to potentially thousands of dollars, depending on its condition and grade. Uncirculated examples can command higher prices, with some sources suggesting up to $4,000 for uncirculated specimens, while circulated coins are worth less, possibly around $600 or a few hundred dollars.

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hello fellow coin collectors : ) love the Scottsdale Mint bar @Mustang67 and great post re varieties and errors! Very inspiring! The upcoming Bluey has brought me out of the woods re coins and it was great to see you’re still going strong Mustang Rav3n and Tyme : ) I collected a couple of the smallest gold coins in the world from Macquarie Mint just so I had some gold too : ) and I can’t display due to kids and animals. Honestly, air and dust concerns me too. Just keeping them tucked up safely in a suitcase wrapped in acid free paper. Mustang, your collection is huge! I wonder if you could insure it? I hope are well and have a good week!

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

@rav3n I love the Silver Vortex Bar Scottsdale Mint bar too. I won that in a coin dip, so it only cost me $10. I was so excited when I won it. I love the design.

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

@Harmonium yes my collection is growing and I am running out of places to store them, since I can't display them. I have made one enquiry about insurance, and was told that I need to use an insurance broker t find a company that will insure them.

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

May be worth trying to find a broker as I’ve heard contents insurance is not as costly as other insurance. Never done this myself, but I have found travel and car insurance a blessing.

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Loved the big things coins but finances were tight that week. Glad you got those. How quintessentially Australian are those coins!

Re: Coin Collectors' Corner

Hi @Mustang67 . Wow! I’m very impressed with your new coin collection purchases! I remember looking through the women’s weekly birthday book as a kid - my mum made me the Dolly Varden cake once- and I was so impressed with all of the different cakes in there. The duck cake has now become popular once again due to Bluey I believe! Whilst I’m not into rugby union, I do like the 2 coins you purchased as well. The giraffe coin also looks to be a very special coin as you’ve stated it’s an investment coin. Does that mean it will increase in value over time? I’ve still got my Bluey coins from last year that I purchased. I now wonder if they have increased in value?

Are you planning on purchasing any more coins later on? Please keep posting them as I really enjoy seeing what you’ve purchased and what is coming up. Coin collecting is a fascinating hobby!
